Often referred to as the "panhandle" the Karpas peninsula is a wild and unspoiled area. Largely agricultural, the Karpas has some of the the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean, undeveloped and usually deserted.

The Karpas was inhabited since ancient times, the numerous archaeological sites and early churches in the area testify to the population having been bigger than today.

The main tourist sights are the beaches archaeological sites and numerous churches. The best of these are:

The ruins of the fortress of Nitovikia just south of Kuruova, the ruins of the harbour town of Carpasia, the remains of Aphendrika once one of the major cities on Cyprus, and the Apostolos Andreas monastery.
